Dakota Technologies announces tool for measuring sub-surface soil color

Staff report
Enviro-Net

Dakota Technologies now offers the SCOST, soil color optical screening tool, for determining soil color, one of the most important properties in identifying and classifying soil horizons. The SCOST provides all the benefits of an in-situ optical tool including no investigation derived waste.

The SCOST is offered as a stand-alone product or it can fit inside Dakota Technologies’ UVOST and TarGOST products, allowing the SCOST to utilize existing fiber cables and probes. The unit can be delivered into the ground with nearly all direct-push platforms including the Geoprobe, AMS PowerProbe and cone penetrometer test systems.

Logging data densities at more than 12 readings per foot, the SCOST records both RGB and Munsell color information, as well as the conductivity, push rate and hammer rate to electronic file. When finished with a hole, the unit produces an image that shows soil color versus depth.
